Free Reggae Concert in Golden Gate Park

The Crucial Reggae Sundays concert series is happening today at the Golden Gate Bandshell in San Francisco. The free, all-ages event kicked off at 4:30 PM.

The Golden Gate Bandshell, also known as the Spreckels Temple of Music, has a long history of hosting free public performances, having been gifted to the city by sugar magnate Claus Spreckels in 1900. It is the oldest structure in the park's Music Concourse. The tradition of free concerts in Golden Gate Park dates back even further, with the Golden Gate Park Band performing since 1882. "Crucial Reggae Sundays" is part of the Illuminate LIVE series, which is now in its sixth year and presents over 125 free, all-ages performances annually. Since 2020, Illuminate LIVE has hosted more than 700 free concerts, drawing nearly a million people to the venue. The series is a collaboration between the nonprofit Illuminate and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. The reggae series is hosted by resident selectors Irie Dole of Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi, Guidance, and DJ Sep from Dub Mission. Each week, they are joined by special guest DJs and live performers, creating a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere centered around reggae and dancehall music. Golden Gate Park has been a significant location for free musical events for decades, including memorable performances by the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane during the 1960s. This history of open-air concerts has made the park a cultural touchstone for music lovers in San Francisco and beyond.
