Computer Dance Pioneer Showcased

Analivia Cordeiro is a central figure in the history of computer art, recognized as a pioneer in video and computer-based dance. Her 1973 work, "M3X3," is considered one of the first computer-generated choreographies and the first piece of video art created in Brazil. This seminal piece, created when she was just 19, utilized a computer to calculate and generate the dancers' movements. The daughter of Brazilian concrete artist Waldemar Cordeiro, Analivia's work is influenced by a rich artistic heritage. Her background is a unique fusion of dance and architecture, having studied dance with legends like Merce Cunningham and Alvin Nikolais in New York. This interdisciplinary approach is evident in her structured yet expressive choreographies. In creating "M3X3," Cordeiro used a Digital PDP-11 computer with a mere 5 MB of storage and 256 KB of memory. The computer's output consisted of numbers representing body positions, which then had to be manually decoded into stick figures for the dancers, as graphical plotters were not available in Brazil at the time. The movements in the piece were intentionally mechanical and have been interpreted as a critique of the repressive military dictatorship in Brazil (1964–1985). Throughout her career, Cordeiro has continued to innovate at the intersection of the human body and technology. In the 1980s, she collaborated with engineer Nilton Lobo to develop "Nota-Anna," a software system for annotating human movement. Her work consistently explores the dynamic between predetermined systems and the freedom of individual interpretation, a theme that has remained central to her practice for over five decades.
