Apple refreshes Final Cut tools
Apple updated Final Cut Camera and related creator apps with a more professional UI and improved iPhone performance, according to social reporting. The announcement frames the updates as enhancements to on-device production and editing workflows. (x.com)
Apple pushed a fresh round of Final Cut updates on April 9, including Final Cut Camera 2.2 for iPhone and Final Cut Pro for iPad 3.2. (support.apple.com) Final Cut Camera is Apple’s free iPhone recording app for manual video controls like shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus. It also links up to four iPhones or iPads to Final Cut Pro for iPad for live multicamera shoots. (apps.apple.com) The new Final Cut Camera 2.2 release is a maintenance update, not a feature overhaul. Apple said it fixes a bug that stopped format settings from carrying over between sessions, fixes thumbnail refresh problems in the media browser, and adds stability and performance improvements. (support.apple.com) Final Cut Pro for iPad 3.2 shipped the same day with one visible addition: a new Magnetic Timeline tutorial. Apple’s release notes for that update also list bug fixes, including a crash when switching from offline to online mode and an issue that could make media disappear from the browser after moving a project. (support.apple.com) The bigger context is that Apple has been turning the iPhone into a more capable production camera over the past year. In November 2024, Apple added 4K at 120 frames per second recording, lookup table preview, and Log-encoded HEVC capture to Final Cut Camera 1.1. (apple.com) Apple expanded that push again on September 19, 2025, with Final Cut Camera 2.0. That release added ProRes RAW in open gate, Apple Log 2 recording, timecode options, genlock support, and more constant frame-rate choices on supported iPhones. (support.apple.com; apple.com) Those features are aimed at the same problems dedicated camera crews solve with separate gear: matching color, syncing multiple angles, and keeping footage easier to edit later. Apple’s App Store listing says Final Cut Camera can remotely preview, adjust controls, and start recording across up to four connected devices inside Final Cut Pro for iPad. (apps.apple.com) This week’s update landed as part of a broader Apple app refresh. Apple also updated Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Photomator, and other apps in its Creator Studio bundle on April 9, according to release tracking and Apple’s support pages. (9to5mac.com; support.apple.com) For iPhone filmmakers, the practical change is simpler than the social posts suggested: Apple cleaned up reliability issues in the camera app while keeping its larger pro-video push in place. The result is a steadier capture tool for shoots that start on an iPhone and finish in Final Cut. (support.apple.com; apps.apple.com)
