Household Costs Outpaced Income Growth in 2025

New data from Navicore shows that essential household costs are creating persistent financial strain for many. The analysis found that housing and living expenses rose 6% in 2025, while average income increased by only 3%, widening the affordability gap.

- While overall inflation in the U.S. slowed to 2.4% by January 2026, the costs for specific essential categories remained high throughout 2025. For instance, food prices rose by 3.1%, shelter by 3.2%, and electricity by 6.4% year-over-year as of September 2025. - The increase in housing costs is a significant driver of household strain, with the median monthly cost for homeowners with a mortgage reaching $2,035 in 2024. For renters, the median gross rent, including utilities, rose to $1,487 in the same year. - The gap between income and housing prices has been a long-term trend; from 1985 to 2025, the median home price in the U.S. increased by over 415%, while median household income grew by approximately 255%. - By 2025, the national median single-family home price was 5.1 times the median household income, a significant increase from the ratio of 3.5 in 1985. - Lower-income households are disproportionately affected by rising costs as they spend a larger portion of their budget on essentials like energy and food, which have seen significant price hikes. - Posted wage growth has been cooling, measuring 2.9% year-over-year in June 2025, with varied growth across sectors; typically higher-paying occupations in fields like electrical engineering and marketing saw the most strength. - On a positive note, by January 2026, overall real average weekly earnings showed a year-over-year increase, suggesting that for some, wage growth did manage to outpace the general inflation rate. - In response to financial pressures, a record number of jurisdictions—23 states and 65 cities and counties—raised their minimum wages by the end of 2025, with many reaching or exceeding $15 to $17 per hour.
