YC Startup Tackles Home Care With AI

Y Combinator just launched Mochacare, a startup using AI to build virtual assistants for home care agencies. The platform aims to supercharge operations like hiring, scheduling, and generating business insights, showcasing a blend of software engineering and real-world social impact.

Mochacare, part of the Y Combinator Winter 2026 batch, was founded by Pranav Uppiliappan and Nick Walker. Uppiliappan's background includes a BS and MS in Computer Science from Stanford with a focus on AI/HCI, and engineering roles at Linktree, Spotify, Amazon (AWS), and Microsoft (Azure). Walker holds a Master's in CS from UIUC and has experience as an AI agent at GoDaddy and a machine learning research fellow at UCSB. The startup has raised $500,000 in a seed funding round. It aims to address operational inefficiencies in home care agencies, such as caregiver scheduling and hiring, which are significant barriers to growth. The platform utilizes human-in-the-loop AI to automate these processes, allowing agency operators to focus on community relationship building. Mochacare's system functions as an AI-powered applicant tracking system, moving candidates through the hiring pipeline, collecting necessary documents, and using AI agents to handle parts of the interview process. For scheduling, the AI can find replacements when a caregiver calls out by identifying suitable matches based on agency preferences and then contacting them immediately. The platform also handles shift reminders and ensures tasks like clock-ins and session note entries are completed. The broader home care industry is increasingly adopting AI to manage rising caseloads and improve care quality. Current applications include predictive analytics to identify high-risk patients, natural language processing to reduce documentation time, and AI-powered assistants for medication reminders. These tools aim to reduce administrative burdens, prevent caregiver burnout, and allow for earlier intervention to reduce hospital readmissions. The Y Combinator Winter 2024 batch, which Mochacare was a part of, had a significant focus on artificial intelligence, with at least 50% of the 260 selected startups building AI-driven solutions. This highlights a broader trend in the startup ecosystem where AI is being applied to solve practical problems across a wide range of industries, from healthcare to B2B SaaS.
