Jerry Lorenzo's Final Adidas Drop

Jerry Lorenzo unveiled the final Adidas Fear of God Athletics basketball shoe, capping off the much-hyped collaboration between the designer and Adidas. This marks the end of one of streetwear's most watched partnerships.

The partnership was first announced in late 2020, with Jerry Lorenzo appointed to lead the creative and business strategy for Adidas's entire basketball division. This move was seen as a major coup for Adidas, poaching a high-profile designer from its competitor, Nike. The collaboration was intended to revolutionize the performance basketball industry and establish Fear of God Athletics as the third pillar of Lorenzo's brand, alongside his mainline and "Essentials" collections. Despite the initial excitement, the first collection from Fear of God Athletics didn't arrive until late 2023, a nearly three-year wait that tempered some of the initial buzz. The collections featured high-quality materials and Lorenzo's signature minimalist aesthetic, but the reception was mixed. While some praised the luxurious feel, others pointed to the high price points and specific design elements as drawbacks. Jerry Lorenzo has since confirmed the partnership will not be renewed, citing a fundamental difference in creative pacing. He described Fear of God's process as "slow and thoughtful," which clashed with Adidas's faster, performance-driven production calendar. Leadership changes at Adidas were also reported to have impacted the collaboration. Even without the frenzy of Lorenzo's past work with Nike, the Fear of God brand remains a powerhouse in streetwear. His "Essentials" line is a significant revenue driver, and the brand is planning to open new retail locations in Los Angeles and New York. Adidas is moving forward with a slate of other high-fashion collaborations. The brand has ongoing projects with designers like Willy Chavarria and has recently announced a partnership with Simone Rocha, known for her romantic and feminine designs. These collaborations signal a continued focus on blending sportswear with high-fashion aesthetics.
