Tech Workers Protest Anthropic Ban

A group of tech workers is petitioning the Department of Defense and Congress to reverse the recent ban on AI firm Anthropic. They argue the government's designation of the company as a "supply-chain risk" undermines competition and unfairly favors OpenAI as the dominant AI supplier for defense agencies.

The ban follows a breakdown in negotiations over the military's use of Anthropic's AI model, Claude. The core of the dispute is the Pentagon's insistence that Anthropic permit its technology to be used for "all lawful purposes," a demand the company refused. This impasse led President Donald Trump to order all federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's technology and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to designate the company a "supply chain risk" on February 27, 2026. Anthropic's refusal was rooted in its concerns about its AI being used for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The company stated that "no amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of Defense will change our position" on these issues and has vowed to challenge the "supply chain risk" designation in court. This designation is historically reserved for foreign adversaries and has never before been publicly applied to a U.S. company. The directive from Secretary Hegseth goes beyond just government use, stating that no military contractor, supplier, or partner may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic. This has wide-ranging implications, as it could force major companies that contract with the Pentagon to sever their ties with the AI firm. There is a six-month transition period for agencies to find alternative services. In contrast, competitor OpenAI has secured a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense. OpenAI has stated that its agreement includes "more guardrails" than what was offered to Anthropic and prohibits the use of its technology for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. This has led to a broader debate within the tech industry about the ethical boundaries of AI development for military applications.
