Havasu Falls Backpacking Success

An Arizona backpacker completed the grueling 20-mile round-trip hike to Havasu Falls, sharing photos of the reward. The desert canyon adventure showcases one of the Southwest's most coveted hiking destinations. Forest trail hikers are also discussing bear safety and food storage techniques for upcoming mountain adventures.

The trek to Havasu Falls is located entirely on the Havasupai Indian Reservation in a side canyon of the Grand Canyon. The Havasupai, known as the "people of the blue-green water," have inhabited this area for at least 800 years and tourism is now the primary source of revenue for the tribe. Gaining access to the stunning turquoise waterfalls requires a highly competitive permit, as the number of visitors is restricted. All reservations for the mandatory 4-day, 3-night trip must be made online through the official Havasupai Reservations website, and permits for the entire season often sell out on the day they are released. The hike from the Hualapai Hilltop to the campground is approximately 10 miles one-way, with a significant elevation change of about 2,500 feet. The initial and final miles consist of steep switchbacks, while the majority of the trail follows a dry riverbed on the canyon floor. For 2026, the Havasupai Tribe introduced a new early access permit system, allowing prospective hikers to purchase permits in January for an additional fee, ahead of the general sale in February. This change replaced the previous lottery system, with permits sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The village of Supai, located 8 miles from the trailhead, is one of the most remote communities in the United States; mail is still delivered by mule train. Besides the campground two miles beyond the village, visitors can find a lodge, a store, and a cafe. The iconic blue-green color of Havasu Creek's water is due to a high concentration of lime, which forms the travertine pools and ledges the waterfalls are famous for. This natural wonder creates a stark and beautiful contrast with the surrounding red rock of the canyon.
