Reuters Claims Banksy Identity Revealed
Reuters reports they've unmasked Banksy as a Bristol-born graffiti artist after an investigation involving interviews and legal docs. The investigation traced Banksy's activity back to a mural painted on a bombed-out building in Horenka, Ukraine in 2022 [https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/global-art-banksy/]. Meanwhile, “The Mystery of Banksy” exhibition just opened in Manchester, featuring reimagined works.
The Reuters investigation reportedly involved interviews with a dozen Banksy insiders and examination of photos, U.S. court records, and police reports. His long-time lawyer neither confirmed nor denied the findings but cautioned against publication, citing privacy and safety concerns for the artist. The news agency claims to have applied the same principles it uses everywhere, arguing the public has a deep interest in understanding figures who shape social and political discourse. Banksy confirmed creating seven murals in war-torn regions of Ukraine in November 2022, including Kyiv, Irpin, and Borodyanka. One mural in Horenka depicts a man bathing in the ruins of a building, reflecting how war disrupts daily life. Another mural in Borodyanka shows a child flipping an adult in a judo match, interpreted by some as representing Ukraine overpowering Vladimir Putin, who is a black belt in judo. "The Mystery of Banksy: A Genius Mind" exhibition features over 200 recreated works, including graffiti, photographs, sculptures, and video installations. The exhibition, already seen by over 3.5 million people in 36 cities, has made its UK debut in Manchester. Curators emphasize that the exhibition contains no original Banksy works, billing it as an independent tribute in line with Banksy's stance that "copyright is for losers".
