South Africa processed 1,278,344 travelers through its borders over the 2026 Easter period, a sharp jump from a year earlier. (gov.za) The Border Management Authority said the total covered 71 ports of entry during a 10-day operation that ran from March 31 to April 9. Commissioner Michael Masiapato said traffic was 21% higher than in Easter 2025. (gov.za) The busiest crossing was OR Tambo International Airport with 234,389 travelers, followed by Lebombo on the Mozambique border with 195,293 and Beitbridge on the Zimbabwe border with 148,451. News24 reported large increases at Lesotho crossings too, including a 57% rise at Ficksburg and 31% at Maseru Bridge. (news24.com) Easter is one of South Africa’s heaviest travel windows because religious holidays, school breaks, family visits and regional road traffic all hit at once. The Border Management Authority said the period compresses demand into one weekend, unlike the longer December-January festive season. (gov.za) The government prepared for that surge by extending hours at selected land borders and adding support staff at major gateways. The Western Cape deployed about 50 officers to Cape Town International Airport, Gauteng kept 80 officers at OR Tambo, and the Department of Tourism added more than 160 tourism safety officers. (gov.za) South Africa also coordinated with six neighbors — Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, eSwatini and Botswana — before the holiday rush. Those talks led to temporary hour changes at crossings including Groblersbridge, Kopfontein, Kosibay, Jeppes Reef, Mananga, Caledonspoort and Van Rooyensgate. (sanews.gov.za) The Border Management Authority said the operation paired faster processing with tighter enforcement. During the 10 days, officials screened 31,588 light vehicles, 8,937 trucks, 1,286 buses and more than 11,000 taxis and informal operators. (news24.com) Authorities said 4,763 people were intercepted trying to cross illegally, down 24% from Easter 2025, while 138 facilitators were arrested, up 22%. Officials also issued 2,509 fines worth more than R1.5 million and carried out 42 joint operations with other law-enforcement agencies. (news24.com) The Easter totals give South Africa an early read on how much pressure its ports of entry can expect during peak travel periods in 2026. The Border Management Authority said it will use the report to plan future high-volume border operations. (gov.za)
