Disney Reboots Eragon Series
Disney is officially rebooting *Eragon* as a new series, giving Christopher Paolini's dragon-filled fantasy world a fresh adaptation. The project aims to rectify the shortcomings of the original 2006 film and capture a new generation of fantasy fans with serialized storytelling.
Author Christopher Paolini, who began writing the first book at age 15, is deeply involved in the new adaptation as a co-writer, co-showrunner, and executive producer. His participation is a direct response to fan desires for a more faithful retelling of the story. The previous 2006 film adaptation from 20th Century Fox was a critical failure, earning a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics and fans cited its unfaithfulness to the source material, a weak screenplay, and unconvincing world-building as major shortcomings, leading to the cancellation of a planned franchise. The greenlight for the Disney+ series follows a multi-year fan campaign, notably the #EragonRemake movement on social media. Paolini himself encouraged the effort, asking fans to "bring the thunder" and let Disney know they wanted a proper adaptation. The new series is helmed by co-showrunners Todd Harthan (*High Potential*) and Todd Helbing (*Superman & Lois*). They are joined by executive producer Marc Webb, known for directing *(500) Days of Summer* and *The Amazing Spider-Man*. A writers' room for the show began work in late 2025, signaling active development. While the project is officially moving forward, no casting announcements or a potential release date have been revealed. The source material, "The Inheritance Cycle," spans four main books, offering a vast narrative beyond the first novel. The book series has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, highlighting the large, established audience awaiting the new show.
