French NBA Players Thriving Post-Trade

French players are exploding in expanded roles after recent trades — Yabusele jumped from 2.7 to 11.0 points per game, Rupert from 3.6 to 9.5 points, and Dieng from 3.7 to 8.9 points. Strong debuts also include James Harden (23 pts), Jonathan Kuminga (27 pts), and Jaren Jackson Jr. (22 pts) with their new teams.

The recent trade deadline has unlocked opportunities for several French players to showcase their talents in expanded roles. Guerschon Yabusele, for instance, is seeing a significant uptick in usage with the Chicago Bulls after being traded from the New York Knicks. In his first seven games with the Bulls, he is averaging 10.6 points and 6.3 rebounds, a substantial increase from his 2.7 points per game with New York. This comes as Chicago looks to fill a void in their frontcourt. Similarly, Rayan Rupert is making the most of a new environment. After being waived by the Portland Trail Blazers, where he averaged 3.6 points in the 2025-26 season, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. In his initial games with Memphis on a 10-day contract, he averaged 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds, earning a two-way contract and a larger role. The initial report of Gorgui Dieng's resurgence is inaccurate, as the Senegalese-French player retired from basketball in 2023. However, other French players have recently changed teams. Evan Fournier was traded to the Detroit Pistons and has seen his scoring average increase to 7.2 points per game, up from the limited appearances he had with the Knicks earlier in the season. Former lottery pick Killian Hayes has also found a new home, signing a 10-day contract with the Sacramento Kings. In his first five games with the Kings, he is averaging 2.5 points and 3.3 assists as he looks to solidify his place in the rotation. The trend of players making an immediate impact with new teams extends beyond the French contingent. James Harden's debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers saw him score 23 points, with 15 of those coming in a crucial fourth quarter to secure a victory. Jonathan Kuminga, after being traded from the Golden State Warriors, exploded for a season-high 27 points in his first game with the Atlanta Hawks. He also added seven rebounds and four assists in the win, immediately stepping into a significant role. Jaren Jackson Jr. also made a splash in his debut for the Utah Jazz after being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies. The former Defensive Player of the Year put up 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists in his first outing with his new team.
