Chicano Park Day returns to Barrio Logan on Saturday, April 25, with the 56th annual commemoration of the community fight that created the park in 1970. (chicanoparkmuseum.org) The Chicano Park Steering Committee set this year’s event for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Chicano Park, and San Diego Tourism lists live music, dance, food vendors, arts and crafts, a car show and fireworks. (chicanoparkmuseum.org) (sandiego.org) University of California San Diego’s events calendar says the day will include danza Azteca, lowriders, art and local vendors in Barrio Logan. (calendar.ucsd.edu) The date tracks the park’s founding on April 22, 1970, when Logan Heights residents and Chicano movement activists stopped construction of a California Highway Patrol station on land they had been promised for a park. (chicano-park.com) (chicanoparkmuseum.org) That protest turned the space under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge into one of the best-known public sites of the Chicano movement, and the annual celebration now serves as the park’s birthday observance. (chicano-park.com) (sandiegomagazine.com) Chicano Park remains a major mural site as well as a gathering place. San Diego Tourism says the seven-acre park holds more than 100 murals, while the National Park Service says the landmark’s mural program documents the history and politics of the Chicano movement. (sandiego.org) (nps.gov) The park’s historic status has expanded over time. The Chicano Park Steering Committee says the site has been on San Diego’s historical landmarks registry since 1980, on the California Register since 1997, on the National Register of Historic Places since January 23, 2013, and a National Historic Landmark since December 23, 2016. (chicano-park.com) The murals are still being documented and interpreted. The Chicano Park Museum says a 2023 update of the mural map was prepared with University of San Diego researchers in consultation with the steering committee. (chicanoparkmuseum.org) This year’s commemoration lands three days after the 56th anniversary of the April 22, 1970 takeover, bringing the celebration back to the same stretch of Barrio Logan where residents first claimed the land as “tierra mía.” (chicanoparkmuseum.org) (smithsonianmag.com)
