Mother Dies on Bridge to Nowhere Trail

A young mother was swept away and killed in the San Gabriel River while hiking the Bridge to Nowhere trail in California. Officials are warning hikers that conditions remain dangerous with fast-moving water and unpredictable weather. Separately, a climber was rescued after a fall at Red Rock Canyon in a complex seven-hour operation, highlighting the risks in popular outdoor destinations.

The woman who died on the Bridge to Nowhere trail was identified as 33-year-old Jaqueline Aguilar De Lao. She was at the second river crossing of the San Gabriel River on Sunday, March 1, 2026, when she fell and was swept away by the current. Members of the San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team were already at the East Fork trailhead that morning, actively warning hikers about the hazardous water conditions. A runner alerted them to the incident, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff's departments, but the search ended in a recovery operation. This trail has a history of incidents, particularly after rainfall. The area was also impacted by the Bridge fire in 2024, which burned over 56,000 acres and can increase the risk of flooding and debris flows. Authorities have strongly urged the public to stay away from the trail until water levels significantly decrease. In the separate Red Rock Canyon incident, the injured climber fell an estimated 40 to 50 feet on the "Dream Safari" route located on the Dark Shadows Wall in Pine Creek. Despite severe head and back injuries, the climber's helmet was credited with likely saving their life. The rescue operation was highly complex, requiring a team of four search and rescue officers and a volunteer to rappel several hundred feet to reach the victim. After providing medical treatment, they used a three-station lowering system to bring the climber to the ground before they were transported to a hospital.
