They highlighted the importance of authenticity in procedural storytelling and representing women in STEM and law enforcement.

The series, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on March 11, 2026, stars Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist, and Curtis as her sister Dorothy. The series is based on Patricia Cornwell's bestselling Kay Scarpetta book series, which has sold over 120 million copies worldwide since 1990. The show has eight episodes, with Liz Sarnoff as developer, writer, and showrunner. Kidman and Curtis also serve as executive producers, alongside Cornwell and others. Kidman prepared for the role by training with a medical examiner, learning how to perform autopsies. "Scarpetta" explores the complexities of the characters, delving into the psychological aspects of both the investigators and the perpetrators. The first season adapts both the first and 25th books in the series, "Postmortem" and "Autopsy". Season 2 is slated to cover "Cruel and Unusual" and "The Body Farm".
