City Detect Raises $13M

City Detect secured $13 million in Series A funding for its vision AI platform that helps cities monitor and address issues like trash, graffiti, and infrastructure hazards in real time. The startup's technology enables municipalities to stay safe and clean through automated urban management solutions.

The latest $13 million Series A funding round was led by Prudence Venture Capital, with participation from Zeal Capital Partners, Knoll Ventures, and Las Olas Venture Capital. This brings the company's total funding to $15 million, following a $2 million seed round in August 2024. City Detect was founded in 2021 by CEO Gavin Baum-Blake, an Army veteran and attorney, and Dr. Erik Johnson, an economist with over 14 years of experience in machine learning. The concept originated from Dr. Johnson's academic research at the University of Alabama on urban blight, identifying the need for real-time data to enable cities to be more proactive. The company's technology utilizes cameras mounted on existing municipal vehicles like garbage trucks and street sweepers to capture street-level imagery. Its AI then analyzes this imagery to detect over 100 types of issues, including code violations, illegal dumping, and graffiti, without the need for new infrastructure. To address privacy concerns, the platform automatically blurs faces and license plates and is focused on environmental and structural issues rather than tracking people. City Detect holds a SOC 2 Type II compliance and has a public policy on responsible AI. The new capital is earmarked for expanding the engineering team and advancing the technology, with a particular focus on developing storm damage detection capabilities. The company also plans to use the funds to accelerate its national expansion efforts. City Detect's platform is already in use in at least 17 municipalities, including major cities like Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, and Birmingham. In Atlanta, the system has identified 1.5 million pieces of litter, over 1,400 illegally dumped tires, and nearly 3,500 piles of debris.
