Artemis 2 is designed as a crewed lunar flyby mission to validate the Orion spacecraft, the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and mission operations for future lunar landings. The 10-day mission will send four astronauts around the Moon and back, testing systems in deep space conditions. It marks the first time humans will travel aboard Orion and venture beyond low Earth orbit in over 50 years. The Artemis 2 mission aims to assess mission planning and operations, spacecraft and system performance, crew interfaces and habitability, and guidance, navigation, and communications. The crew will perform checkouts of the spacecraft's life support systems and conduct an in-space rendezvous demonstration. It will also test optical communications to and from Earth using the Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System (O2O). The Artemis 2 mission has faced delays due to technical issues, including a hydrogen fuel leak and a helium-flow problem. NASA is targeting a launch in early April, with potential dates identified. The mission's crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
