Michelin expands U.S. map
Michelin is broadening its U.S. footprint into the American Great Lakes — Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh are now included — with the first stars for that region set to be revealed in 2027. (Separately, Michelin named Jalisco as host city for the Michelin Guide Mexico 2026 ceremony in May, signalling continued geographic expansion and a widening prestige ladder for regional kitchens.) Michelin just drew a new food map for the United States, and it skipped the usual coastal script. Its new American Great Lakes edition will cover Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh, with the first selection coming in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) That is a bigger shift than it sounds, because Michelin does not rate every city in America. Its current United States guide coverage is concentrated in places like New York, California, Chicago, Washington, Florida, Colorado, Atlanta, Texas, and the American South. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) Michelin says its inspectors are already in the field, dining anonymously and paying their own way. The company says stars are awarded for what is on the plate, not for tablecloths, views, or celebrity. (guide.michelin.com) The new guide is regional on purpose. Instead of launching one city at a time, Michelin bundled six metro areas into a single Great Lakes edition, which gives smaller markets a way in without each city having to stand alone like New York or San Francisco. (guide.michelin.com) The stars are only one layer of the system. Michelin also hands out Bib Gourmand awards for restaurants it considers strong value, plus special awards for service and other categories, so the first 2027 list will almost certainly be wider than a handful of tasting-menu dining rooms. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) For cities like Cleveland and Pittsburgh, this is also a tourism play. Local destination groups and state tourism agencies backed the launch, which follows Michelin’s recent model of expanding with support from public tourism partners rather than dropping into markets on its own. (guide.michelin.com) (axios.com) Michelin is using the same playbook outside the United States too. In Mexico, it announced that Jalisco will host the 2026 Michelin Guide ceremony on May 20, and it separately said Jalisco, Puebla, and Yucatán will be added to the country’s selection in 2026 after the guide first launched there in 2024. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) That means Michelin is no longer treating prestige dining as something confined to a short list of obvious capitals. It is building regional ladders, where a city can first get inspectors, then Bib Gourmands, then stars, and then a yearly ceremony that turns local restaurants into a travel reason. (guide.michelin.com) (guide.michelin.com) The next year will be the tense part for chefs in the Great Lakes cities. Michelin says the inaugural selection will be revealed in 2027, which means restaurants now know the inspectors are coming but do not know who is already on the shortlist. (guide.michelin.com)
