Apple Building AI Server Factory in Texas

The Houston facility is a 250,000-square-foot plant slated to open in 2026 as part of a campus that will double in size to 500,000 square feet. Workers will assemble advanced AI servers, including logic boards produced onsite, which will be used to power Apple's data centers across the United States. This factory is a component of a massive four-year, $600 billion U.S. investment plan aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and AI infrastructure. The broader commitment includes sourcing over 20 billion U.S.-made chips from suppliers like TSMC in Arizona and Texas Instruments. The Houston site represents a dual expansion; besides AI servers, it will also house the first-ever U.S. production of the Mac mini. To support this growth, Apple is building a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center on the campus to provide hands-on workforce training. This domestic investment follows years of supply chain diversification away from China, a strategy accelerated by pandemic-related disruptions and geopolitical friction. Apple's suppliers have already invested an estimated $16 billion since 2018 to move production to alternative hubs like India and Vietnam. The servers from the Houston plant are foundational for Apple's "Private Cloud Compute" system, which powers its "Apple Intelligence" services. This reflects a strategic pivot towards vertical integration of its AI hardware, reducing reliance on third-party suppliers for critical infrastructure. Apple's AI capital expenditure, at around $12.7 billion in fiscal 2025, is notably more restrained than the $50 billion-plus budgets of rivals like Microsoft and Google. The company is betting on a hybrid model, combining its own cloud infrastructure with a heavy emphasis on on-device processing to enhance user privacy.
