Novartis Plans Texas Cancer Facility

Pharmaceutical company Novartis has announced plans to build a new manufacturing site in Denton, Texas. The company will invest $280 million in the facility, which will produce next-generation cancer treatments and expand domestic production capacity for advanced therapies.

- The 46,000-square-foot facility will produce radioligand therapies (RLTs), which are a type of precision cancer treatment that delivers radiation directly to cancer cells. These therapies are time-sensitive due to the decay of radioactive components, making regional manufacturing hubs crucial for timely patient delivery. - This plant is part of a larger $23 billion, five-year investment by Novartis to expand its manufacturing and research capabilities in the United States. The Denton location will be the company's fifth RLT manufacturing site in the U.S., joining others in California, Indiana, New Jersey, and a recently announced facility in Florida. - Construction on the Denton facility is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the plant expected to be fully operational in 2028. The project is anticipated to create 150 to 175 jobs in fields such as bioengineering, advanced manufacturing, and quality control, with an average salary of over $124,000. - The City of Denton approved a tax incentive package worth over $3.2 million to attract Novartis. In return, the city anticipates receiving approximately $4.8 million in tax revenue from the facility over a ten-year period. - The new plant will be located at 2101 Shady Oaks Drive, a site that has been vacant since US Radiopharmaceuticals ceased operations there in 2009. Novartis's plans include renovating existing buildings and adding new structures to support its operations. - Novartis's two currently approved RLTs are Lutathera, for neuroendocrine tumors, and Pluvicto, for prostate cancer. The company is also conducting clinical trials for RLT applications in other types of cancer, including breast, colon, lung, and pancreatic cancer.
