Pokémon Pokopia Sells Out Physically
Pokémon Pokopia's physical Game-Key Card release has sold out at numerous online retailers despite fan criticism over the non-cartridge format. The game continues getting praise for its refreshing world-building and habitat creation mechanics developed through Game Freak's collaboration with Koei Tecmo. Social media shows @NinEverything reporting worldwide sellouts across US, UK, Canada, and Japan markets.
The "Game-Key Card" format, which requires a significant download and offers no traditional game cartridge, was a calculated risk. This approach marked the first time Nintendo itself published a title in this format for the Switch 2, a move previously reserved for third-party developers, sparking concern among physical media collectors. The decision was particularly questioned given the game's relatively small 10GB file size, which could have easily fit on a standard cartridge. The game's development was a collaboration between Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force studio. Game Freak conceived the initial idea, drawing inspiration from the joy of creating worlds in mainline Pokémon RPGs, but brought in Omega Force due to their expertise in the sandbox genre, specifically with their work on *Dragon Quest Builders 2*. This partnership led to a game that blends elements of *Animal Crossing*, *Minecraft*, and *Viva Piñata*. At the heart of *Pokémon Pokopia* is the habitat creation system, with over 200 habitats to build. Players, taking on the role of a Ditto transformed into a human, must arrange specific combinations of plants, furniture, and other items to attract different Pokémon. For example, placing four patches of tall grass together can create a habitat that attracts classic Pokémon like Bulbasaur and Squirtle. The sellout situation appears to be a result of high demand meeting an underestimation of the game's appeal, with reports of it being "seriously undersupplied" at UK retailers. Physical sales in the UK were reportedly less than half of what *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* achieved. In North America, Walmart Canada publicly cited "massive demand" for its rapid sellout and began taking pre-orders for a second wave of shipments. Critically, the game has been a massive success, tying with *Pokémon Y* as the highest-rated Pokémon game of all time on the review aggregator Metacritic. This positive reception, combined with strong word-of-mouth, is driving interest beyond the typical "cozy game" audience and positioning *Pokopia* as a potential system-seller for the Nintendo Switch 2. The name "Pokopia" itself is derived from the Spanish phrase "poco a poco," meaning "little by little," reflecting the gameplay of gradually building the world one block at a time. The game's multiplayer functionality includes a "Cloud Island" feature, which allows multiple players to build on a shared island together, even when the host is not online, similar to a *Minecraft* server.
