OpenAI publishes Codex rate card

- OpenAI published a Codex rate card on May 13 that sets token-based credit prices across Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, Health and Gov plans. - OpenAI said GPT-5.5 costs 125 credits per million input tokens and 750 per million output tokens under the new Codex schedule. - OpenAI’s Help Center says users can monitor remaining credit, buy more, and manage auto-reload from Codex settings.

OpenAI published a Help Center rate card for Codex on May 13 that spells out how the coding product is billed across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, Health and Gov plans. The page says Codex usage is now priced by API token consumption, measured in credits per million input, cached input and output tokens, rather than by message. The company said it made that pricing change for Plus, Pro and Business customers on April 2, 2026, and extended it to all existing Enterprise customers, including Edu, Health, Gov and ChatGPT for Teachers, on April 23. The Help Center page says a small subset of Enterprise customers remains on a legacy rate card and should contact OpenAI sales. ### When did OpenAI change how Codex is billed? April 2, 2026 is the date OpenAI says it shifted Codex pricing to token-based billing for new and existing Plus, Pro and ChatGPT Business customers. The Help Center article says the company moved away from “per-message pricing” to align Codex with API token usage. April 23, 2026 is the date OpenAI says the same change reached all existing ChatGPT Enterprise plans, including Edu, Health, Gov and ChatGPT for Teachers. The published rate card says the token-based format gives users “a clearer view” of how input, cached input and output affect credit consumption. ### What does the new rate card actually charge? OpenAI’s Help Center lists GPT-5.5 at 125 credits per 1 million input tokens, 12.50 credits per 1 million cached input tokens and 750 credits per 1 million output tokens. The same table lists GPT-5.4 at 62.50 credits for input and 375 for output, GPT-5.4-Mini at 18.75 for input and 113 for output, and GPT-5.3-Codex at 43.75 for input and 350 for output. GPT-5.2 is listed at the same rates as GPT-5.3-Codex. (help.openai.com) The Help Center page also lists GPT-Image-2.0 for image and text use, and says “Fast mode consumes credits at a higher rate for supported models.” For GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, the page says the model may be available as a research preview and that its credit rates “are not final.” ### Which plans are covered, and what do users get? OpenAI’s developer pricing page says Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans. (help.openai.com) The same page lists Plus at $20 per month and Pro from $100 per month, while Business is described as pay-as-you-go and Enterprise and Edu as contact-sales offerings. The developer page says Plus includes Codex on the web, in the command-line interface, in the IDE extension and on iOS, along with cloud-based integrations such as automatic code review and Slack integration. Pro includes access to GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark as a research preview and, according to the page, “double your normal Codex usage” on the $100-per-month tier until May 31, 2026. (developers.openai.com) ### How does OpenAI describe the cost for a typical developer? OpenAI says in the Help Center article that Codex costs “~$100-$200/developer per month” on average, though it says there is “a large variance” depending on model choice, number of instances running, automations and use of fast mode. The company presents that figure as an average rather than a fixed subscription price. (developers.openai.com) The developer pricing page says usage limits depend on the model used, the size and complexity of coding tasks, and whether users run them locally or in the cloud. It says small scripts may use only a fraction of a user’s allowance, while larger codebases and long-running tasks consume more. ### Where can customers track usage and buy more credits? (help.openai.com) OpenAI says in the Help Center article that users can monitor usage limits, view remaining credit, purchase credit and manage auto-reload credit in the Codex settings usage panel. The same article says the rate card applies under the company’s flexible pricing structure for covered plans. (developers.openai.com) May 31, 2026 is the next dated milestone named on OpenAI’s Codex pricing page. The company says the temporary doubling of normal Codex usage on the $100-per-month Pro tier runs until that date. (developers.openai.com) (help.openai.com)
