US targets gamers for ATC roles

The U.S. government is launching an air‑traffic‑controller recruitment drive that targets gamers, with applications opening April 17 and the programme capped at 8,000 applicants. The campaign reportedly does not require a college degree and frames cognitive skills as the main entry criterion (pcmag.com).

The Federal Aviation Administration is opening its next air traffic controller hiring window on April 17 and is pitching the job directly to gamers. (transportation.gov) The Department of Transportation said the application window opens at 12 a.m. Eastern time on April 17, and the Federal Aviation Administration’s checklist says the posting will stay open only until 8,000 applications are received. (transportation.gov) (faa.gov) The agency said it is targeting young adults with “high cognitive functions,” multitasking, spatial awareness, strategy, and problem-solving, and its ad tells viewers: “It’s not a game. It’s a career.” (transportation.gov) (abcnews.com) The push comes as the Federal Aviation Administration says it has almost 11,000 controllers in service and more than 4,000 trainees in the pipeline, while it tries to raise staffing after years of shortages. (transportation.gov) (abcnews.com) A Government Accountability Office report cited by ABC said the number of controllers fell about 6% over the past decade even as flights rose 10% and travel rebounded after the pandemic. (abcnews.com) The job does not require a four-year degree. The Federal Aviation Administration says applicants must be United States citizens, speak English clearly, be younger than 31 before the application closes, and have either one year of full-time work experience, one year of higher education, or a combination of both. (faa.gov 1) (faa.gov 2) Getting in is still selective. The Federal Aviation Administration says candidates must pass the Air Traffic Skills Assessment, clear medical and security checks, and complete training at the agency’s academy in Oklahoma City; fewer than 10% of applicants are accepted into training. (faa.gov 1) (faa.gov 2) The sales pitch is money and speed as much as gaming. The agency’s checklist says controllers can reach six-figure pay within three years, and the Federal Aviation Administration says it cut the hiring process from eight steps to five, shaving more than four months off the old timeline. (faa.gov 1) (faa.gov 2) The government is also trying to expand the pipeline beyond this campaign. In August 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration said it planned to hire at least 8,900 new controllers through 2028 and to expand college and simulator-based training programs. (faa.gov) The union that represents controllers said it supports broader recruiting, including outreach to gamers, as long as every path keeps the same safety standards. The first test of that strategy starts when the application window opens on April 17. (abcnews.com)
