Shooting near D.C. Metro station injures two
A man and a juvenile were injured in a shooting near the Petworth Metro station in Washington, D.C. Police are investigating the incident. The conditions of the two individuals have not been released.
The incident, which occurred around 9:01 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, also resulted in the death of 19-year-old Zephaniah Wright of Northeast, D.C. A third adult male victim self-transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds sustained on the 800 block of Taylor Street, Northwest. The 15-year-old was transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Police believe the shooting that killed Wright and injured the 15-year-old, which took place on the 3700 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest, was a targeted attack. A suspect vehicle was later found unoccupied. By September 2025, two 18-year-olds, Jose Hernandez and Jayden Wells, had been arrested and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed (Premeditated). The Petworth neighborhood has a crime rate that is 86% higher than the national average, with violent crimes being 155% higher than the national average. Statistics show a 1 in 26 chance of becoming a victim of a crime in Petworth. The southern parts of the neighborhood see the highest number of incidents, with approximately 152 crimes annually. This shooting is part of a larger trend of increasing juvenile involvement in violent crime in Washington, D.C. The percentage of homicides and non-fatal shootings committed by individuals aged 15-to-20 nearly doubled between 2021 and mid-2024. In 2022, 90 juveniles were shot in the city, and 97 were arrested for first-time violent crimes. The District's Office of the Attorney General (OAG) prosecutes the majority of violent juvenile offenses. In 2024, the OAG prosecuted over 90% of homicide and attempted homicide cases, 87.1% of carjacking cases, and 85.7% of gun possession cases involving juveniles. This contributed to a 35% decrease in overall violent crime in 2024 following a spike in 2023.
