US Demand for High-Skilled Immigrants Rises

The March 2026 Visa Bulletin has confirmed significant movement in the EB1 and EB2 employment-based immigration categories. These visas are for professionals with advanced degrees or "extraordinary ability." The shift typically signals rising U.S. demand for high-skilled talent, particularly in STEM, healthcare, and executive roles, which could increase competition for specialized jobs.

The March 2026 Visa Bulletin advanced the filing date for EB-1 candidates from India and China by four months to December 1, 2023. For Indian professionals in the EB-2 category, the date jumped forward by a significant 11 months to November 1, 2014, while the category became "Current" for applicants from most other countries. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will use the more favorable "Dates for Filing" chart for March. This allows a larger pool of applicants already residing in the U.S. to submit their final I-485 applications for adjustment of status, a crucial step toward receiving a Green Card. This action provides stability and work authorization for many while they await final visa availability. This significant forward movement follows the exhaustion of the annual visa quotas for the EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3 categories in Fiscal Year 2025, which ended on September 30, 2025. The halt in approvals at that time created a backlog, and the current bulletin changes suggest an effort to work through this pent-up demand now that new visa numbers are available for the fiscal year. The demand for these visas is underpinned by strong growth in STEM fields. Employment in STEM occupations is projected to grow more than twice as fast as non-STEM jobs over the next decade. Mathematical sciences, in particular, are projected to be the fastest-growing occupational category through 2033. High-skilled immigrants currently constitute about 5% of the U.S. workforce but generate over 10% of the national labor income. Studies show immigrants are responsible for nearly a third of U.S. innovation and are roughly 80% more likely to found a business than native-born citizens. The parallel H-1B visa program, another avenue for high-skilled talent, is also seeing changes. The registration period for the FY2027 cap runs from March 4 to March 19, 2026. This year's lottery will move away from a purely random selection to a system that prioritizes higher-wage occupations.
