Snapchat Pilots Creator Subscription Model
Snapchat is reportedly piloting a new creator subscription model that allows influencers to offer exclusive content or experiences behind a paywall. The experiment reflects a broader industry trend of social platforms diversifying revenue beyond advertising by enabling direct-to-creator payments and premium community features.
This move is part of a broader industry pivot, as platforms from Instagram to TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) have all introduced similar subscription tools to offer creators more stable, recurring revenue streams beyond the unpredictability of advertising income. These platforms are increasingly competing to retain top talent by providing monetization features that foster deeper connections with their most engaged followers. Snapchat's subscription offering allows creators to set a monthly fee in exchange for exclusive perks. For their subscription, fans can get access to subscriber-only Snaps and Stories, have their replies prioritized, and get an ad-free viewing experience for that specific creator's Stories. The initial alpha test includes creators like Jeremiah Brown, Harry Jowsey, and Skai Jackson. This new feature complements Snap's existing monetization tools, which include a unified ad revenue-sharing program for Stories and Spotlight videos and the Snap Star Collab Studio for brand partnerships. To be eligible for the broader ad monetization program, creators generally need at least 50,000 followers and significant viewership numbers, such as 10 million Snap views in the last 28 days. Competitor platforms offer a range of similar features. Instagram Subscriptions provide access to exclusive content like posts and Reels, subscriber chats, and special badges. TikTok's subscription model, which expanded from LIVE to all eligible creators, also includes exclusive content, private chats, and unique badges, with creators able to set different pricing tiers. X's Creator Subscriptions, originally called Super Follows, allow creators to offer subscriber-only content and interactions for a monthly fee set between $2.99 and $9.99. The platform has a notably creator-friendly revenue split, with creators keeping up to 97% of revenue (after app store fees) until they hit $100,000 in lifetime earnings. The pioneer of this model, Patreon, has long enabled creators to run membership businesses by offering different tiers of exclusive content and community access. This direct-to-fan model has proven that audiences are willing to pay for content to support creators they value, establishing a blueprint that larger social platforms are now integrating directly into their ecosystems.
