a16z Launches 'Alpha Fellowship' for Tech Talent

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) just launched the Alpha Fellowship for early-career technical talent, including recent grads and students at universities like USC. The program provides a $50,000 grant and mentorship to work on AI-first projects, creating a direct pipeline into the venture capital and startup ecosystem.

The Alpha Fellowship is spearheaded by a16z Partner Katia Ameri, a Los Angeles native and Stanford graduate who also co-created #LATechWeek, and Jordan Mazer, Head of Talent for a16z's speedrun accelerator. Mazer previously led recruiting efforts at Riot Games during its major growth phase, and also has experience from Amazon and Scopely. This program is a direct feeder into a16z's speedrun accelerator, which has invested over $180 million in more than 150 startups since 2023. Alpha fellows on the founder track who refine their ideas receive a guaranteed final-round interview for speedrun, which offers up to $1 million in funding. Notable speedrun alumni who have raised millions after the program include Michael Lingelbach of Hedra and Nandini Mullaji of Sitch. For students interested in AI's application in fintech, portfolio projects could draw inspiration from a16z's thesis on AI agents reshaping financial services. Project ideas include developing AI agents for trading decisions, building smart loan recovery systems that use predictive analytics, or creating Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) applications to analyze financial documents like 10-K filings. In the biotech and healthcare space, a16z has invested in companies like Genesis Therapeutics, which uses AI for drug discovery, and Hippocratic AI, which is developing AI agents for healthcare tasks. Aspiring fellows could develop projects like building models to predict drug-target interactions, analyzing public biological datasets with machine learning, or even creating "digital twins" of patients to predict treatment outcomes. The fellowship's connection to Los Angeles is significant, as a16z has been expanding its presence with a new office in Santa Monica. This provides a local nexus for networking and mentorship. For USC students, on-campus organizations like the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) offer workshops and industry networking events. Beyond campus, the LA area hosts numerous relevant meetups. Groups like "LA Machine Learning" and "AI ML and Data Science Meetup Los Angeles" provide opportunities to connect with local professionals and researchers. Additionally, "AI Tinkerers" meetups in Los Angeles bring together builders focused on LLM and generative AI applications for demos and shared learning.
