Marc Barton's Strongman Journey

Former rugby prop Marc Barton, aged 41, is setting his sights on the Ultimate World Championships in South Africa this summer, competing in the under-105kg Masters category. After injuries forced his retirement from rugby, Barton's shift to strongman has propelled him to the world stage, showing how foundational strength can unlock new athletic chapters.

Marc Barton's entry into the world of strongman was almost accidental, beginning about four years ago after severe injuries, including a snapped leg and a bicep torn from the arm, ended his rugby career. During his recovery, a friend entered him into an amateur strongman competition without his knowledge, sparking a new athletic passion. His initial foray into the sport was at Dorset's Strongest Man, where he surprisingly placed second. This early success spurred him on to enter more competitions throughout the southwest of England, where he consistently performed well before moving on to international events. Now residing in Bishop Auckland, Barton holds the title of England's Strongest Master in the under-105kg category. His recent victories include first place at Legionnaire Strongest Man and a second-place finish at Ultimate UK Strongest Master. Before heading to South Africa for the world championships, Barton has a packed schedule. He is set to compete in the Pro Strongman League European Championships in Cumbria and at Arnold's Strongest Master at the NEC in Birmingham. The 5ft 10in athlete balances a demanding training schedule of five sessions a week with his full-time job as a behaviour inclusion officer at a primary school. Barton notes how the sport has evolved, requiring competitors to be agile athletes, not just "big brutes." He emphasizes the need for speed and the ability to excel in moving events, reflecting a significant shift in the world of Strongman.
