The U.S. Department of Transportation said on April 20 it will steer $4.7 billion to Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, with early focus on New York Penn Station and Washington Union Station. (transportation.gov) Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the funding through the Partnership–Northeast Corridor program, a Federal Railroad Administration grant program aimed at cutting project backlogs, improving performance and expanding intercity passenger rail service. The first application round is centered on “high priority major station projects,” and applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on May 5, 2026. (transportation.gov) The Northeast Corridor is Amtrak’s core spine, and the department said the money will go toward station upgrades, rail-service improvements and bridge work along the line. Federal officials described the corridor as the busiest and most complex rail line in the country. (transportation.gov) Amtrak is upgrading the trains that run on that network at the same time. On April 21, the company said its third new Cascades trainset had left Sacramento for the Northeast Corridor for testing after manufacturing was completed. (media.amtrak.com) Those Cascades trainsets are part of Amtrak Airo, a national order of 83 new trainsets that will be used first on Cascades and then on Northeast Regional and other state-supported routes. Amtrak said eight Cascades trainsets are due to finish manufacturing in 2026, while the first Northeast Regional Airo trainsets are also scheduled to complete production and begin testing in 2026. (media.amtrak.com, media.amtrak.com) Amtrak said revenue service for Airo on the Northeast Regional is expected to begin in 2027. The company said the new fleet will also be assigned to routes including Empire Service, Keystone Service, Virginia Services, Downeaster, Maple Leaf and Vermonter. (media.amtrak.com, amtrak.com) The rail buildout comes as Amtrak says demand is already at record levels. The company reported 32.8 million riders in fiscal 2024, the highest annual total in its history, while saying it invested more than $4.5 billion in major infrastructure projects that year. (media.amtrak.com) The near-term test is whether station work and fleet testing move fast enough to meet those timelines. For now, the federal deadline is May 5 for the first Northeast Corridor grant applications, and Amtrak is already sending new trainsets east to prepare for service.
