Shooters Enter "Golden Era"

The shooter gaming genre is experiencing what fans call a "golden era" with Arc Raiders receiving high praise, Overwatch reviving, Rainbow Six getting major updates plus a worldwide mobile launch, Rust delivering its biggest update, and anticipation building for Deadlock and Marathon releases.

The extraction shooter *Arc Raiders* has been lauded for its polished and satisfying gameplay loop, with some critics calling it one of the best games of 2025. The game's tension-filled matches and deep progression system have been highlighted as key strengths that elevate the genre. *Overwatch* has seen a significant resurgence, with its player count on Steam more than doubling its previous peak after a recent relaunch. This revival is attributed to a major update that introduced five new heroes at once, with more slated to arrive every two months. Ubisoft's *Rainbow Six Mobile* launched globally on February 23, 2026, after an extended development period that included beta tests and a soft launch. The mobile title brings the core 5v5 tactical gameplay to iOS and Android with over 20 operators and seven maps at launch. Meanwhile, the long-standing PC title *Rainbow Six Siege* is planning major evolutions, including "Siege X" in June 2025, which will introduce modernized maps and new gameplay mechanics. The game's esports scene is also being revamped for 2025 to create a more sustainable and engaging competitive environment. The survival shooter *Rust* continues to grow, boasting its highest-ever peak player count in 2025, twelve years after its initial release. A significant "Jungle Update" introduced new biomes and animals, with a "Naval update" and new monuments planned for 2026. Bungie, the creators of *Destiny*, are set to release their new PvP extraction shooter, *Marathon*, on March 5, 2026. The game will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S with full cross-play support. Valve is also entering the fray with *Deadlock*, a 6v6 third-person hero shooter with MOBA elements. The game is currently in an invite-only playtest, with a full release anticipated for late 2025 or early 2026.
