Analysis: Most B2B Firms Are Optimizing for the Wrong AI

Your content strategy may be targeting the wrong AI engine. A new analysis reveals that while ChatGPT has 67% enterprise adoption and drives 87% of AI referral traffic, only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. The data suggests many B2B companies are missing out on enterprise deals by focusing their SEO and content efforts on less dominant platforms.

The core issue isn't just about choosing an AI; it's recognizing that each platform operates as a distinct ecosystem. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews use fundamentally different methods to find and cite information, which explains why a recent analysis found only an 11% overlap in the domains they referenced. Optimizing for one platform provides no guarantee of visibility on the others. This divergence in information sourcing creates a new strategic discipline: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on driving clicks, AEO aims to have your content directly cited and featured in AI-generated answers. This is critical because traffic from AI referrals shows significantly higher conversion rates; one study found ChatGPT referrals converted at 15.9% compared to 2.8% for traditional organic traffic. The underlying architectures explain the citation gap. ChatGPT primarily relies on its training data and uses Bing's search index for real-time queries. In contrast, Perplexity was built as an "answer engine" that actively searches the web for each query, using its own web crawlers in addition to APIs from Google and Bing. This leads Perplexity to cite nearly three times as many sources per response on average compared to ChatGPT. Content strategy must now adapt to these different "AI appetites." For instance, ChatGPT favors comprehensive, authoritative content with clear heading structures, citing pages with 120-180 words between headings 70% more often. Perplexity, with its focus on community and peer-to-peer information, gives significant weight to sources like Reddit. Meanwhile, Google's AI Overviews still show a 76% overlap with the top 10 traditional search results, making conventional SEO a relevant foundation for that specific platform.
