US Deploys AI 'Kamikaze' Drone in Combat
The U.S. military has confirmed the first combat use of its LUCAS autonomous drone in recent airstrikes on Iran. LUCAS is an expendable, one-way attack drone, marking a significant step in the real-world deployment of AI-driven systems in U.S. defense doctrine.
The LUCAS (Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System) is manufactured by Arizona-based SpektreWorks. In an ironic turn, the drone was reverse-engineered from the Iranian Shahed-136, the same family of drones used extensively by Russia in Ukraine and by Iranian-backed groups in the Middle East. This allowed the U.S. to rapidly develop and deploy a similar capability. This first combat deployment was carried out by the newly formed Task Force Scorpion Strike, a unit established in late 2025 under U.S. Central Command to fast-track the acquisition and fielding of affordable drone technology. The operation, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," involved coordinated airstrikes with Israel and targeted senior Iranian leadership and key military infrastructure. Priced at approximately $35,000 per unit, LUCAS represents a strategic shift towards "affordable mass," allowing the military to saturate defenses and overwhelm adversaries with large numbers of inexpensive, expendable systems. This preserves more sophisticated and expensive munitions for higher-value targets. The drone carries a 40-pound payload, roughly double the explosive yield of a Hellfire missile, and has a range of around 500 miles. While described as autonomous, the LUCAS platform features advanced capabilities for swarm coordination and network-centric strikes, all while keeping a human "in the loop." This aligns with the Department of Defense's Directive 3000.09, which mandates that all autonomous weapon systems must be designed to allow commanders and operators to exercise "appropriate levels of human judgment over the use of force."
