Farm-raised salmon recalled

Slade Gorton & Co. has issued a recall for one lot of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club. The recall was prompted by potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious infections.

The specific product recalled is the 2-pound bag of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon with lot number 3896 and UPC code 888670025963. The affected salmon was sold at BJ's Wholesale Club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia between January 31 and February 7, 2026. The contamination was discovered after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration collected a random sample that tested positive for *Listeria monocytogenes*. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. The salmon was farmed in Norway and processed in a facility in Poland before being distributed by Slade Gorton & Co. *Listeria monocytogenes* is a bacterium that can survive and grow even in refrigerated temperatures. Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, and diarrhea. However, the infection can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, potentially leading to miscarriages and stillbirths. This is not the first recall for the Boston-based Slade Gorton & Co. In 2017, the company recalled several breaded tilapia products due to undeclared milk allergens. Another recall was issued for frozen langostinos due to potential *Listeria* contamination. Studies have shown the presence of *Listeria* in raw salmon products. One report indicated that the detection rate of *Listeria* in Norwegian raw salmon rose from 1.7% in 2022 to 3.6% in 2024. The FDA's recall process for such contamination is classified as Class I, which signifies a situation where there is a "reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." Slade Gorton, a company founded in 1928, is a major importer and distributor of seafood in the United States. In March 2023, the company was acquired by Cooke Aquaculture. BJ's Wholesale Club is directly notifying members who may have purchased the recalled product, and customers can call 1-888-628-0730 for refund instructions.
