Delhi Metro has begun a mid-life overhaul of its oldest Blue Line trains, adding charging points, new safety gear and updated passenger systems. (delhimetrorail.com) (hindustantimes.com) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said the work targets its first-generation rolling stock, known as RS-1, on the Blue Line. Hindustan Times reported the program covers 70 trains built between 2002 and 2007. (hindustantimes.com) (republicworld.com) The retrofit adds mobile charging points, closed-circuit television cameras, liquid crystal display route maps, upgraded public address and passenger information systems, and fire detection units. Republic World and other outlets said the trains are also getting refreshed interiors and driver desk upgrades. (republicworld.com) (thedailyjagran.com) The work is being done in phases so Blue Line service can keep running during the upgrade. OneIndia reported the refurbishment is scheduled to run through November 2027. (oneindia.com) (hindustantimes.com) That matters on one of Delhi Metro’s core east-west corridors, which runs from Dwarka Sector 21 toward Noida Electronic City, with the Vaishali branch splitting from Yamuna Bank. Delhi Metro’s network page lists the Blue Line as Lines 3 and 4, opened in stages beginning on November 13, 2009, for the Yamuna Bank to Noida City Centre section. (delhimetrorail.com 1) (delhimetrorail.com 2) Delhi Metro is carrying heavy volumes across its network: the corporation said it logged a record 78.67 lakh passenger journeys on November 18, 2024. Upgrading older trains instead of pulling them early lets the operator keep capacity on a system that remains India’s busiest metro network. (delhimetrorail.com 1) (delhimetrorail.com 2) The Blue Line trains now being rebuilt are among the oldest in Delhi Metro’s fleet, and DMRC has already been tendering and certifying refurbishment work on RS-1 equipment, including door systems and jumper cables. Those documents show the agency has been extending the life of early rolling stock through component-by-component upgrades before this broader passenger-facing refresh. (delhimetrorail.com 1) (delhimetrorail.com 2) For riders, the change will be most visible in small things: phone charging, clearer route displays, sharper announcements and more cameras inside coaches. For DMRC, the project is a way to modernize 20-year-old trains without taking a major corridor out of service. (hindustantimes.com) (republicworld.com)
