Southeast Asia Sees Beach Tourism Boom

Southeast Asia's beach tourism sector is experiencing a boom, contributing to a projected $299.2 billion global market. Major airlines like Emirates and Qatar Airways are expanding routes, while hotel groups including Marriott and Hilton are increasing their presence in the region. This growth reflects a global pivot toward experiential and heritage-focused travel.

- Recent visa reforms are a significant driver of the tourism surge, with countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines easing entry requirements. Thailand's mutual visa-free policy with China, which started on March 1, 2024, resulted in a threefold increase in travel bookings on the first day compared to pre-pandemic levels. - The market is forecast to grow from USD 35.52 billion in 2025 to USD 67.41 billion by 2031, with Vietnam projected to see the fastest growth at a 13.22% compound annual growth rate. In 2025, international arrivals to the region reached 144 million, exceeding the 143.6 million recorded in 2019. - Malaysia surpassed its neighbors as the most visited nation in the region, attracting 28.2 million tourists in the first eight months of 2025 alone. Meanwhile, Vietnam's tourism sector has recovered to 98% of its pre-COVID level, outstripping both Thailand (87.5%) and Singapore (86%). - In response to demand, Hilton is adding nearly 4,000 rooms across the region, including new luxury properties like the Waldorf Astoria Hanoi and Conrad Hoi An in Vietnam, and its first LXR Hotels & Resorts property in Thailand, The Rawai Phuket. - Marriott International is also expanding its footprint with new properties such as the Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa on Thailand's Eastern Seaboard and the Marriott Vacation Club, Khao Lak Beach Resort. - Regional and international airlines are adding new connections to beach and resort destinations, including an AirAsia route from Kuala Lumpur to Labuan Bajo, Indonesia (the gateway to Komodo National Park) and a new Turkish Airlines service connecting Istanbul, Bangkok, and Phnom Penh. - While international arrivals are key, domestic travel forms a stable base for the market, accounting for 63.72% of the total tourism revenue in Southeast Asia in 2025. - There is a coordinated regional effort to focus on sustainable development, with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) implementing action plans to promote green and inclusive tourism.
