OpenAI acquires Promptfoo for AI security
OpenAI announced the acquisition of Promptfoo, an open-source AI security platform, to bolster agentic security in OpenAI Frontier.
Promptfoo, founded in 2024, had raised over $23 million in funding and was valued at $86 million as of July 2025. Their platform helps developers secure LLMs and AI agents by identifying and remediating vulnerabilities in AI systems during development. OpenAI plans to integrate Promptfoo's technology into OpenAI Frontier, its platform for building and operating AI coworkers. Frontier helps companies create, launch, manage, and monitor AI agents, integrating AI directly into corporate workflows. Promptfoo offers automated security testing and red-teaming capabilities, which will become a native part of the Frontier platform. This includes identifying risks like prompt injections, jailbreaks, data leaks, tool misuse, and out-of-policy agent behaviors. The platform also provides features for security and evaluation integrated into development workflows, and reporting and traceability features.
