Medvedev Stuck in Dubai After Airstrikes
Daniil Medvedev and other players are stuck in Dubai due to airspace closures following U.S. airstrikes in the region, despite Medvedev recently winning the Dubai Tennis Championships title. The Russian star assured fans that "everything is fine" and he's awaiting clearance to continue his season. Multiple players are affected by the travel restrictions.
The travel chaos stems from a significant military escalation that began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched a series of airstrikes against Iran. In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and U.S. military facilities in several Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates. These actions prompted widespread airspace closures over Iran, Iraq, the UAE, Qatar, and other nations, leading to the most severe disruption in global air travel since the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of flights were canceled over the weekend, severely impacting major international hubs like Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. The airport closures began just as the Dubai Tennis Championships were concluding. Medvedev was awarded the title on Saturday, February 28, after his opponent in the final, Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, had to withdraw. Griekspoor suffered a hamstring injury during his semi-final victory over Andrey Rublev and could not compete in the championship match, giving Medvedev the title via a walkover. This marked Medvedev's second career title in Dubai and his first time winning the same tournament twice. The travel disruption leaves Medvedev’s schedule in jeopardy. He is slated to compete next at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, which is scheduled to begin on March 4. The Russian player is currently waiting with his family in a Dubai hotel, stating that "no one knows when we'll be able to fly out."
