New Museum NYC to Explore Future of Humanity
New Museum in New York City will host an exhibition titled “New Humans: Memories of the Future” across its newly expanded campus. The show will explore themes of memory, the future, and what makes us human. The exhibition's focus on speculative futures and humanistic storytelling is expected to influence creative narratives in adjacent fields like fashion.
- The 60,000-square-foot expansion is designed by OMA partners Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu, creating a campus in dialogue with the museum's original 2007 building by fellow Pritzker Prize-winners SANAA. - The inaugural exhibition opens on March 21, 2026, with free admission for the opening weekend, and is curated by a team led by the New Museum's Artistic Director, Massimiliano Gioni. - The show will place 20th-century visionaries like Salvador Dalí, Hannah Höch, and H.R. Giger in conversation with contemporary artists known for their work with technology and speculative futures, including Hito Steyerl, Pierre Huyghe, and Anicka Yi. - More than fifteen new works have been commissioned for the exhibition from artists including Jamian Juliano-Villani and Camille Henrot. The expansion will also feature permanent, site-specific installations by artists Tschabalala Self and Sarah Lucas. - The new building will provide a dedicated, purpose-built home for NEW INC, the museum's cultural incubator that supports creative practitioners working at the intersection of art, design, and technology. - In addition to doubling the gallery space, the expansion adds a new full-service restaurant operated by the Oberon Group with chef Julia Sherman, a 74-seat forum for talks, and an enlarged seventh-floor Sky Room with panoramic city views.
