Free Music Production Plugins Released

Three new free plugins — Puffer Fish, ÆLAPSE, and Phlegetron — are now available for music producers and home studio artists. The tools offer fresh sounds and effects for electronic and indie music creators, enhancing production flexibility without added cost.

Puffer Fish comes from developer Sonible, a company typically known for its high-quality, AI-driven audio software. It simplifies audio saturation into a single "Puffiness" knob and three character modes, moving away from complex technical interfaces. The three modes—Tinyfin, Spikeskin, and Twitchgill—offer distinct flavors ranging from subtle warmth and gentle harmonics to aggressive, gritty distortion. ÆLAPSE, from developer Smiarx, combines two distinct effects: a tape-style delay and a spring-inspired reverb. The delay and reverb sections can be used independently of one another. Its delay engine includes a "Drift" parameter to introduce subtle, analog-style instabilities, while the reverb has unique controls like "Shape," "Scatter," and "Chaos." Phlegetron by Igorski is a dual-band distortion tool with a notable twist on signal splitting. Instead of only using a traditional frequency crossover, it can also separate the audio into harmonic "bins," allowing one band to contain the overtones of a selected frequency and the other to hold the rest. Each of Phlegetron's two bands can be processed with one of five different distortion algorithms. The options include a wave shaper, a wave folder for creating complex harmonics, a hard-clipping fuzz, and a digital "crush" effect for quantization artifacts.
