Design shows add cultural programs
Salone and associated programs are leaning into cultural programming this year — Miu Miu’s Literary Club returns to Milan with talks on desire, sexuality and female empowerment, while product highlights like Faye Toogood’s ‘Lie Low’ bed for Poltrona Frau are already drawing attention. Milan Design Week is adding more talks, books and public programs to the furniture launches that usually dominate the week. (salonemilano.it) The 64th Salone del Mobile.Milano runs April 21 to 26 at Fiera Milano Rho, and the official guide says this year’s edition includes a public program alongside new fair sections such as Salone Raritas, curated by Annalisa Rosso and designed by Formafantasma. (salonemilano.it) Miu Miu is bringing back its Literary Club in Milan from April 22 to 24 at Circolo Filologico Milanese, with the 2026 edition titled “Politics of Desire” under the direction of Miuccia Prada. WWD reported it is the event’s fourth edition overall and third during Milan Design Week. (wwd.com) The program centers on Annie Ernaux’s “A Girl’s Story” and Ama Ata Aidoo’s “Changes,” using those books to frame discussions about sexuality, consent and self-determination. Fuorisalone’s event listing says the club belongs to the Brera Design District program and describes it as a bridge between literature and contemporary life. (fuorisalone.it) This year’s format is broader than before. Event listings say April 24 will be an added public day, and visitors will receive copies of either Ernaux’s or Aidoo’s book while the full program went live on April 13, 2026. (thedesignrelease.com) The product side of the week is still central, and early coverage has focused on Faye Toogood’s “Lie Low” bed for Poltrona Frau. Wallpaper said the piece is among its Salone del Mobile 2026 highlights and described it as a new entry in Toogood’s work with the Italian furniture brand. (wallpaper.com) Toogood’s relationship with Poltrona Frau did not start this week. Wallpaper previously reported that the British designer debuted with the brand in 2024 through the Squash collection, a collaboration that marked her first work in leather and upholstered furniture for the company. (newswav.com) Salone itself is also moving further into collectible and limited-run design inside the fairgrounds. Official materials say Salone Raritas will debut in Pavilion 9 with one-off pieces, limited editions and high-craft manufacturing rather than only mass-market furniture launches. (salonemilano.it) That mix of books, talks, installations and furniture is now being built into the week before the doors even open. By April 13, 2026, the headlines around Milan were already split between a fashion house’s reading program and a bed launch from one of Italy’s best-known furniture brands. (wwd.com (wallpaper.com))
