Lexus ES EV Undercuts Hybrid

Lexus has announced that its first all-electric ES sedan will start at under $50,000 in the US, making it more affordable than the hybrid version — a significant development for luxury car buyers considering an EV. This pricing strategy could accelerate premium EV adoption.

The redesigned 2026 Lexus ES lineup marks a significant shift by eliminating gas-only options and expanding into a fully electrified range. The new generation is built on a redesigned TNGA GA-K platform, specifically developed to accommodate both hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. This eighth-generation ES was first unveiled at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition. The all-electric ES is available in two versions: the front-wheel-drive ES 350e and the all-wheel-drive ES 500e. The base ES 350e produces 220 horsepower with an estimated range of 300 miles. The more powerful dual-motor ES 500e delivers 338 horsepower but has a lower estimated range of 250 miles. By comparison, the 2026 ES 350h hybrid model generates 243 horsepower. A significant change for the hybrid is the new option of all-wheel drive, which was not previously available. The starting price for the hybrid has increased by $6,280 compared to the previous model year. Both electric variants will feature a NACS (Tesla-style) charging port, allowing access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Lexus indicates that with DC fast charging, the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes under ideal conditions. Inside, the new ES gets a significant technology upgrade with the latest Lexus Interface multimedia system. The cabin features a standard 14-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The design of the new ES, both inside and out, was inspired by the LF-ZC concept car.
