Stripe Taps Base for AI Agent Payments
Payments firm Stripe is integrating the Base blockchain to enable instant, on-chain USDC payments for autonomous AI agents via its new x402 protocol. This allows AI agents to perform programmable, smart-contract-based payments, initially on Base with plans for expansion to other blockchains. The move blurs the line between traditional and decentralized payment rails for a new class of automated transactions.
- The x402 protocol repurposes the dormant "HTTP 402 Payment Required" status code, allowing a server to request payment from a client (like an AI agent) as part of a standard web request, enabling on-chain transactions to happen natively. When an agent requests a paid resource, the server returns a 402 error with payment details; the agent then sends the USDC payment and retries the request with a confirmation to gain access. - Stripe Product Manager Jeff Weinstein highlighted that the traditional financial system is not built for AI agents, which require support for microtransactions, 24/7 global availability, and instant finality—all features addressed by this on-chain solution. All transactions, whether from humans or agents, are unified in the Stripe dashboard, which also handles sales tax, refunds, and reporting. - The choice of Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, enables fast and low-cost transactions, which is critical for the high-frequency, low-value micropayments typical of machine-to-machine interactions. This addresses the need for near-zero fees and instant settlement without the risk of chargebacks. - Early adopters are already emerging, with market data provider CoinGecko implementing x402-powered API endpoints. This allows autonomous agents to pay a flat rate of $0.01 USDC per request for market and on-chain data without needing an API key or account. - This initiative is part of Stripe's broader strategy to embrace the "agent economy." Founders Patrick and John Collison have identified AI and stablecoins as transformative forces that will reshape the future of commerce. - To facilitate developer adoption, Stripe has released an open-source command-line tool called `purl` and sample code in both Node.js and Python for testing and building machine payment solutions. - The move comes as Stripe's valuation is reportedly being explored at $140 billion in a new tender offer, a significant increase from its previous valuations. The company's crypto strategy is seen by the market as a key driver of this growth.
