Xcel Energy Center's 'X' Sign Sells for $21K

The iconic rooftop "X" from the Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild, just sold for $21,000 in an auction. The event highlights the power of local identity and community connection, a key branding element for any new Minnesota-based business.

The auctioned "X" sign, which sold for $21,200, is a genuine piece of the arena's history, not a replica. Measuring approximately 8 feet by 8 feet and showing wear from its 25 years atop the building, the letter was sold as-is, without any of its original lighting or electrical components. The sale was part of the Minnesota Wild Foundation's "Greater State of Hockey Broadcast Auction," with all proceeds supporting the foundation's mission. The foundation funds youth hockey programs and children's medical causes throughout Minnesota. This auction followed the arena's significant name change. After Xcel Energy's 25-year, $3 million-per-year naming rights deal concluded, the Minnesota Wild entered a new 14-year partnership with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Effective September 3, 2025, the venue became the Grand Casino Arena, prompting the removal of all original Xcel Energy Center signage and branding ahead of the 2025-26 NHL season.
