American Airlines is heading into the 2026 summer season with its biggest summer schedule on record, telling customers it expects 75 million travelers across 750,000 flights from May 21 through Sept. 8. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier said Memorial Day weekend is the first major test, with more than 4.2 million customers booked across more than 40,000 flights from May 21 through May 26. American paired that message with a May 22 video on summer readiness as holiday traffic began building. The airline’s public guidance has centered on staffing, schedule design, maintenance work and digital tools for customers whose trips are disrupted. ### How busy does American expect summer to be? American said its 2026 summer travel period runs from May 21 to Sept. 8 and will surpass its previous 2019 record. The airline said the busiest point at the start of that period is Memorial Day weekend, when it expects more than 4.2 million customers over six days. The company said Friday, May 22, was expected to be the most traveled day of that holiday stretch. (news.aa.com) American’s May 10 newsroom post described the season as its “largest summer schedule to date.” ### What changes did the airline say it made before the rush? American said it did offseason preventive maintenance on its fleet, prepared facilities for summer heat and added staffing in key locations before the peak season began. (news.aa.com) The carrier said those steps were part of a broader push to handle heavier traffic with fewer disruptions. David Seymour, American’s chief operating officer, said in the May 10 statement that the airline’s more than 130,000 team members had built an operation “that’s not only reliable and resilient, but ready for the summer peak demand.” He said the company had restructured hubs and invested in scheduling with customers in mind. American said it introduced a new 13-bank schedule at DFW that had already reduced delays, customer misconnects and gate changes in its first month, while also producing record baggage-handling performance and higher customer satisfaction. (news.aa.com) Philadelphia International Airport was another focus. American said a redesigned afternoon schedule for transatlantic flights at Philadelphia was intended to ease congestion, improve on-time performance and give travelers more options. Chicago O’Hare International Airport also featured in the company’s planning. American said Federal Aviation Administration action to bring schedules back within O’Hare’s operating capacity should give customers a more reliable summer experience, with fewer congestion-related delays. (news.aa.com) American’s travel-alert pages say severe weather and other uncontrollable events can trigger change-fee waivers and online rebooking options. As of May 20, the airline had posted a severe weather alert for parts of the Northeast U.S., including Boston, New York-area airports, Philadelphia and Washington. The airline says affected travelers may be able to make a one-time change online if their trip is eligible. (news.aa.com) American also says customers whose flights are impacted will receive email and app notifications. ### What is American telling travelers to do now? American says its app lets travelers check in starting 24 hours before departure, add checked bags, receive live updates and use mobile boarding passes. (aa.com) The app also allows customers to rebook delayed or canceled flights instantly rather than waiting in line at the airport, according to the airline. The carrier also offers flight notifications through its app, by email or by text. (aa.com) American says customers can sign up for “BeNotified” alerts for every flight, including day-of-travel delays, cancellations, departure reminders and gate changes. May 26 is the end of the Memorial Day travel window American identified as the first summer surge. (aa.com) American’s broader summer operating plan runs through Sept. 8, with the airline directing customers to its app, travel-alert pages and flight-notification tools for updates during the season.
