UK Food Inflation Hits 4.3%

UK food inflation rose to 4.3% in February, putting additional pressure on household budgets and complicating the Bank of England's rate outlook. This uptick is being closely watched by both policymakers and consumers, as food prices remain a key driver of overall inflation and cost-of-living concerns.

The February uptick in food inflation marks a reversal after four consecutive months of easing, with data from Worldpanel by Numerator showing grocery price inflation climbing to 4.3% in the four weeks to 22 February. This is an increase from the 4% seen in January. However, other measures suggest a different trend. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported that food inflation slowed to 3.5% in February, down from 3.9% in January. Their data indicated that while fresh food inflation was 4.3%, inflation for ambient foods like canned goods dropped to 2.3%, its lowest level in four years. The rise to 4.3% was partly driven by seasonal events. In the week of Valentine's Day, consumers spent £39 million on premium dine-in meal deals, a sevenfold increase from the week before. Similarly, the cost of ingredients for Pancake Day was nearly 6% higher than a year ago. Specific categories driving the increase included fresh unprocessed meat, skincare, and chocolate confectionery. Chocolate prices, in particular, were 9.3% higher year-on-year ahead of Easter. Conversely, prices for butter, household paper, and sugar confectionery saw the fastest declines. This inflation data complicates the Bank of England's next move. The Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to meet next on March 19. At their last meeting on February 5, the committee voted by a narrow 5-4 majority to hold the Bank Rate at 3.75%. The unexpected rise in grocery inflation has led some analysts to believe an interest rate cut in March is now less likely. Despite this recent increase, the Food and Drink Federation forecasts that food inflation will slow over the course of the year, averaging 4.4% in 2026 and falling to 3.1% by December.
