JumpCloud Joins OpenID Foundation
Identity and device management firm JumpCloud Inc. announced it has joined the OpenID Foundation (OIDF) as a Sustaining Corporate Member. The company stated its goal is to contribute to securing AI agents and shaping global identity standards. JumpCloud joins other major technology firms at the foundation's highest membership level.
- The OpenID Foundation (OIDF), established in 2007, is a non-profit organization that develops open and interoperable identity standards, with its specifications being freely implementable. - At the core of the foundation's work is OpenID Connect (OIDC), an authentication layer built on the OAuth 2.0 authorization framework. OIDC focuses on verifying a user's identity, while OAuth 2.0 determines what an authenticated user has permission to do. - JumpCloud uses the OIDC protocol to provide Single Sign-On (SSO) access to web applications, allowing users to authenticate once and gain access to multiple services without repeated logins. - A key focus for the OIDF is the intersection of artificial intelligence and identity, with a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Identity Management (AIIM) Community Group. This group works on defining use cases and architectures to address the security and privacy challenges presented by AI systems. - The foundation recently published a whitepaper titled "Identity Management for Agentic AI," which outlines challenges and recommendations for securing AI agents through authentication and authorization standards. - The OIDF's work is carried out in specialized working groups that create technical specifications. These groups are open to participation from non-members, fostering broader collaboration on standards. - A developing standard within the foundation is OpenID Federation, which is designed to create scalable trust between different digital services. This framework allows for the automatic discovery and verification of entities, including AI agents, across different organizations.
