Chargers Re-Sign Mack $18M
The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly re-signing veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack to a one-year, $18 million deal. Mack's return gives the Chargers leadership and pass-rushing power as they look to bounce back and compete in a tough AFC West. The extension was confirmed by multiple sources including ESPN and Yahoo Sports.
This extension marks the third consecutive one-year deal for Mack with the Chargers, continuing a trend of the veteran pass-rusher playing on short-term agreements as he enters his 13th NFL season. The new contract comes after a 2025 season where Mack recorded 5.5 sacks and 32 tackles. He missed five games with a dislocated elbow but was still considered a disruptive force on the defensive line. His 2023 campaign was one of the best of his career, where he set a Chargers franchise record with 17 sacks. That season, he also tallied 74 tackles, five forced fumbles, and was named to his ninth Pro Bowl. A first-round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2014, Mack's decorated career includes being named the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and three First-Team All-Pro selections. In 2015, he made history by being the first player to be selected First-Team All-Pro at two different positions in the same season (defensive end and outside linebacker). Retaining Mack provides a crucial veteran presence for a Chargers defense that struggled in 2023, ranking 28th in the league in total yards allowed per game (362.9). The team's pass rush was graded 20th in the NFL by Pro Football Focus for that season. The deal was a priority for the Chargers, who faced significant salary cap challenges heading into the 2024 offseason. Before a series of moves, the team was projected to be well over the league's $255.4 million salary cap.
