NFL Free Agency Heating Up
NFL free agency is gaining momentum with the Colts negotiating with RB James Pierce as his market value rises, while the Eagles remain active and A.J. Brown trade rumors continue swirling. The Commanders are also gearing up for major moves as teams prepare for the new league year.
The NFL's "legal tampering" period kicked off on March 9, allowing teams to negotiate with player agents ahead of the official start of the new league year at 4 p.m. ET on March 11. This two-day window is when the groundwork for most major deals is laid, even though nothing can be officially signed. The league has set the 2026 salary cap at a record $301.2 million per team. While the Colts have key offensive free agents like quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Alec Pierce, the running back market features several high-profile names. Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III and Travis Etienne Jr. are among the top backs available, setting a potentially high bar for any new running back contracts this offseason. Trade talks surrounding Eagles receiver A.J. Brown have intensified, with the New England Patriots reportedly showing the most interest. Philadelphia's asking price is said to be steep, seeking a deal similar to the "Quinnen Williams-type" trade, which involved a first and second-round pick. The Eagles are reportedly inclined to trade Brown to an AFC team, with the Patriots and Ravens being likely partners. Philadelphia has a number of its own key players set to hit the market, including 19 unrestricted free agents. The team is making it a priority to re-sign edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, who made an immediate impact after being acquired via trade last season. Conversely, veteran tight end Dallas Goedert is reportedly "definitely moving on" from the team and will be seeking a new contract elsewhere. The Washington Commanders enter free agency armed with significant financial flexibility, possessing over $80 million in salary cap space, among the most in the league. The team cleared additional funds by releasing cornerback Marshon Lattimore, a move that saved $18.5 million against the cap. With their substantial cap room, the Commanders are expected to be aggressive and are targeting several positions. They have been linked to top-tier free agents like center Tyler Linderbaum and wide receivers Alec Pierce and Brandon Aiyuk. Washington is also looking to bolster its pass rush, with edge rushers like Odafe Oweh considered a prime target.
