OpenAI adds shopping features

- OpenAI said ChatGPT now returns organic, unsponsored shopping results from across the web, showing where to buy items and ranking merchants by inventory, price, quality, seller status, and Instant Checkout availability. - The company also launched richer product discovery in ChatGPT, with visual browsing, side-by-side comparisons, image-based shopping prompts, and a “shopping research” mode that asks follow-up questions before producing a buyer’s guide. - The update pushes more product search and comparison into ChatGPT instead of retailer sites or traditional search pages. OpenAI has added shopping features to ChatGPT, turning the chatbot into a place to search for products, compare options, and choose where to buy. (help.openai.com) In OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes, the company said users can ask a shopping question and get “organic, unsponsored” product results pulled from across the web. The results show merchants and rank them using inventory, price, quality, primary seller status, and whether Instant Checkout is available. (help.openai.com) OpenAI separately said on March 24 that it was rolling out a richer shopping experience with visual browsing, side-by-side product comparisons, and more up-to-date product information inside ChatGPT. The company said the rollout covered Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users that week. (openai.com) The shopping tools are built for people who have not decided what to buy yet. OpenAI said users can describe a budget, preferences, and constraints in plain language, then refine results in a back-and-forth conversation instead of opening multiple shopping tabs. (openai.com) OpenAI has also added a separate “shopping research” flow for more involved purchases. In that mode, ChatGPT asks follow-up questions about factors like brand, size, performance, comfort, style, or price before returning a buyer’s guide with top picks and tradeoffs. (help.openai.com) That research mode can draw on ChatGPT memory if the user has memory turned on. OpenAI said prior preferences, such as an interest in gaming, can shape recommendations for products like laptops or accessories. (help.openai.com) Under the hood, OpenAI said shopping research can use merchant product data supplied through its Agentic Commerce Protocol, plus public product information and other retail sources. The same protocol also underpins Instant Checkout, which OpenAI introduced in September 2025. (help.openai.com) (openai.com) The release notes that mention shopping also describe a broader ChatGPT update cycle in April, including “Fast answers,” a feature for common factual questions that does not use chat history or memory. OpenAI said Fast answers are available globally on web, iOS, and Android for logged-in and logged-out users across plans. (help.openai.com) For retailers and brands, the shift is that product discovery can now start inside ChatGPT rather than on a store page or a traditional search engine. OpenAI’s own product posts frame that change as fewer tabs for shoppers and higher-intent traffic for merchants. (openai.com) OpenAI is not presenting the feature as ads-first shopping. Its help page says ads are separate from shopping research, while the release notes describe the core product results as organic and unsponsored. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2)
