Michelin Chef Opens Elevated SF Deli
Loveski Deli, from three-star Michelin chef Christopher Kostow, has just opened in downtown San Francisco. The spot is already drawing crowds for what some are calling the "Bay Area's best bagels," along with an elevated menu of deli classics. The opening blends refined culinary technique with comforting, authentic flavors.
The new outpost at 499 Jackson Street in Jackson Square marks the third location for Loveski Deli. The original "Jew-ish" deli concept was launched by Chef Christopher Kostow and his wife, Martina, in Napa's Oxbow Public Market in 2022, followed by a second location in Marin County Mart. The name "Loveski" is a tribute to Kostow's pre-Ellis Island family name. Chef Kostow previously helmed the three-Michelin-starred The Restaurant at Meadowood in St. Helena, which was unfortunately destroyed in the 2020 Glass Fire. He and his wife also own other establishments, including The Charter Oak in St. Helena and Ciccio in Yountville. The bagels, which the San Francisco Chronicle named the Bay Area's best, are made from a 30-year-old sourdough starter and are boiled in honey, Montreal-style. The menu also features deli classics with a twist, such as a Chopped Reuben with kimchee and a Matzoh Ball Soup offered "Den's Way" with lemongrass and Thai herbs, a nod to Martina Kostow's heritage. The San Francisco location has taken over the space formerly occupied by Postscript Cafe and aims to feel like "the world's coolest bodega." While retaining about 90% of the Postscript staff and popular coffee and smoothie options, the new deli has doubled the seating to 40. Exclusive to the San Francisco menu are items like bone broth, a tahini Caesar salad, and roasted salmon and chicken teriyaki bowls. A unique breakfast burrito with pastrami and a smashed latke is also available daily until it sells out. A key feature of the new location is an expanded "larder section," offering Kostow's unique pantry creations for sale. Customers can purchase items such as tamari and miso made from bagels, pickle hot sauce, and everything-bagel chili crisp.
